The issue of privatization in Education is not unknown for us. Public education in Chile is now in the peak of the iceberg. 20.000 people march for something that is not a gift, is a right!!
Citizens pay taxes every year for giving to young people in Chile an opportunity to study in public universities. The worst is that 70% of students are the first generation in their families in
obtaining higher education.
Yes. the numbers are scary, but hopefully it wont be the end of public education! Imagine if it is happening in chile now probably soon will be here with us, people can not allow the goverment to turn education into a business!
ReplyDeleteLast part of your text scares me: How can these non-professional families pay such fees? I can imagine the great effort they make for keeping their sons in the university.
ReplyDeleteI think "to" is not necessary in the sentence: "for giving TO young people... an opportunity to study".
ReplyDeleteDespite the last sentence expresses a strong idea -the great difficulties for paying-, it is not completely related to the main idea you exposed earlier -education as a right.
...and of course, Education is a right, not a service, a favor or a product. It is a right we have to fight for.
ReplyDeleteI like the phrase where you express with emphasis that public education is a right not a gift, because it help to understand the importance of this matter to everybody. And after you mention how chilean people had been working for it, paying their taxes, but the reality is disappointing.
